March 29, 2021 0

This aloha state may sometimes feel like a foreign country with its tropical weather and cultural differences. Despite certain things that may make you feel far from home, you are still in the safety and comfort of the US.
Hawaii has actually been a part of the United States since 1898, and a state since 1959. With this being said, there are some frequently asked questions about Hawaii that I am here to answer for you.

Do you need a passport to travel to Hawaii?

Traveling to Hawaii

Surprisingly, this question is asked fairly often! As it is the 50th state, you do not need a passport to travel here unless you are traveling here from outside of the United States. You will need some form of identification to travel through airports.

What are the time zone differences in Hawaii?

Hawaii is unique because it has its own time zone, Hawaii Standard Time (HST). HST is 2 hours behind Pacific Standard Time. Because there is no daylight savings here, we are 3 hours behind Pacific Daylight Time. People traveling from US mainland will gain time while visiting Hawaii!

Where is the main airport in Hawaii?

Hawaii’s primary airport is Honolulu International Airport, located on the island of Oahu. All of the major US airlines, two regional carriers, and international airlines offer flights to Hawaii landing at this airport. Certain carriers offer direct service to Maui, Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii from gateway cities on the mainland.

How do I get from one island to another?

There are multiple carriers offering inter island flights. Hawaiian Airlines, Mokulele Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Makani Kai Air. Each of these offer numerous daily flights to accommodate you accordingly. There is only one passenger ferry boat service between Maui and Lanai, but the rest of the islands you can only access by air. Islands like Molokai, Kaho’olawe, or Ni’ihau are inaccessible unless by invitation, private boat or tour (depending which island you are looking to visit).

How long should I stay in Hawaii?

Well, this really depends on what you would like to do here! Would you like to just visit one island, or multiple islands during your stay here? To give you an idea, there are 6 major Hawaiian islands, Oahu, Maui, Big Island, Kauai, Molokai, and Lanai. Each island would probably take a couple of days to see the main attractions. However, that is also quite a bit to jump around and see every island on the same trip. Sometimes, it is more fun to stay in one place, and get to know that island pretty well. You can also go to a couple of islands on this stay, and visit the other ones next time! Your choice! Usually people tend to visit for 1-2 weeks.

What should you wear in Hawaii?

Hawaii has very temperate weather! I always say, aim for casual and comfortable. The average temperature ranges from 73 degrees in January to 80 degrees in August. For most people this is quite warm compared to where you come from. Shorts, tanks, tshirts, flip flops (or as the locals say, “slippahs”) are perfect. A nice dress or aloha shirt is fun for nights out! If you plan to visit volcanoes such as Haleakala, Mauna Loa, or Mauna Kea, you may want to bring warmer clothes as it can be extremely cold at those high elevations.
