How to get the perfect consistency
You will need a blender to make a smoothie bowl. Frozen fruit is key! We always have a huge stash of frozen fruit and bananas are the best. Bananas also offer a natural sweetener. Add 1-2 frozen bananas to the blender, and then whichever other frozen fruits you would like to be in your base (Berries, mangos, papaya, pineapple dragonfruit, etc.).
If you like using juice in your smoothie, freezing some of it will help keep the consistency thick. You may do this by pouring juice in an ice cube tray, and sticking in the freezer over night. Now, the better the blender, the less amount of liquid you will need to use. Using too much liquid will create a smoothie that you will need to drink with a straw. Try not to add more than 1/4 cup to a half cup of liquid to the smoothie bowl. This way you will be able to eat your bowl with a spoon! Try adding raw oats, chia seeds or protein powder to your smoothie bowl base. This will add in some extra protein, but these ingredients also serve as natural thickeners. Some of our favorite liquids to use are orange juice, coconut milk, macadamia nut milk and almond milk.
Once you have made the perfect base, you are ready to pour it into a bowl and add on the toppings! Fresh sliced fruit is always great. Then you can add on your superfoods, butters, nuts, or whatever you would like to try!
Each smoothie bowl on our menu is unique. Here are some of the toppings that we like to use:
Bananas, strawberries, home made granola, coconut flakes, cashews, cacao nibs, hemp seeds, goji berries, mint, and almonds.
At home, I even like to drizzle some peanut butter on top of my smoothie bowl, yum!
