Lisa Prior is passionate about fashion, clothing and fabrics.

She loves vintage western wear, denim, Hawaiian clothing and textiles  (mostly from the 50’s 60’s and 70’s). Since she moved to Maui over 20 years ago she’s been collecting all types of vintage hawaiiana.

Lisa Prior is a talented designer and previously worked for companies like Tamara Catz… until she decided to create her own brand; Misschief, a women’s clothing line along with Little Chiefs of Hawaii, a modern chic kids clothing brand. In 2012 she opened her workshop/boutique, a mix of her eclectic style, “The Station” located in Haiku at the Pauwela Cannery.

The second you walk in, you can feel how strong her passion for collecting is. Her collection consists of aloha shirts, shoes, vintage Hawaiian fabrics, Muumuu’s (old women’s Hawaiian dresses).

At Belle Surf Cafe and at the Station, You’ll also find the 2017 collection for both Misschief and Little chiefs; fabrics are illustrated and handprinted onto soft cotton and inspired by tropical island life.

Lisa, how do you get inspired to create your collections?

I find I Work best when I decide on  a theme first , then I immerse myself in, art, culture, books, movies, and look at vintage fabrics and clothing  –  everything and anything  I can find that has to do with my idea. After drowning myself with that – I take a little break from the images then start with a blank page and put together my own mix of ideas, based on what I would like to wear.

Sometimes I drape on a dress form and just see what happens, or rework vintage clothing to come up with a new look.

I love to mix delicate with tough for my women’s line.

For the kids line I like playing with inspiration from surf, skate culture and vintage Hawaii. I feel a little more free to use color and fun prints – theres so much inspiration all around me for that collection so it flows really easily –  I usually just start sketching!

What is your favorite piece of your collection?

I like my little silver motorcycle earrings – they were fun to make, and go well with our bandana collection.

For clothing my fave is coming in 2017 – its a simple silk blend mini skirt with our new ‘punk’ print.  For the kids collection I like the styles that come in our signature ‘North Shore’ print.

Whats your favorite object in your house and  where did you find it?

Hmm… that’s a hard question! Maybe my vintage cowboy shirt collection.. I have pieces from  the 40’s up to the 70’s… I’ve been collecting vintage cowboy shirts and denim jackets for an embarrassingly long time!

Most were  found in vintage shops along the west coast: San Francisco, Portland and my hometown Vancouver, BC

Where is your favorite place to get coffee?

That’s an easy question : Belle Surf Cafe!

Whats your morning routine?

A hectic mix of taking care of our pets and  getting the kids up, fed and off to school – but It always starts with coffee!

What are you working on now?

I’m showing the Little Chiefs 2o17 collection, and designing a new collection for our Women’s line – I’m super excited about both and can’t wait to have them stocked at ‘The Station’ and at Belle Surf!
