An eco friendly kitchen begins with eating green, but that’s not where it ends! Using equipment from sustainable materials, avoiding toxic chemicals, energy-efficient food preparation and cleaning habits are all important if you would like a genuinely healthy kitchen. Making the right choices for your well being is great for your pocket, and the planet. Here are 6 ways to ‘go green’ in the kitchen, so that you can easily be more environmentally friendly at home.

Cleaning

Get those chemicals out of here! There are many benefits of switching over to non-toxic cleaners. They are perfectly safe around children and pets, keep the air that you breathe clean, they don’t harm the environment, and they can be cost effective. Some people prefer to make their own cleaners, while others purchase them. Or you can do both! Here is a list of natural and eco friendly cleaning products for the conscious home.

Recipe for an All Purpose Cleaner:

1/4 cup white vinegar
2 Tbsp. baking soda
1/4 gallon (1 liter) hot water
A few drops of essential oil (optional)
Combine the ingredients, stir, and let cool for a few minutes before pouring into a spray bottle.  Tea tree essential oil has antiseptic properties, making it a winner for cleaners.  Other amazing aromas come from orange, lemon, and lavender essential oils.  Use and enjoy!

Bring your own shopping bags

Eco friendly

Investing in a few canvas bags will save on paper and plastic! We recommend keeping the reusable grocery bags in your car, so that you always have them ready to go when you head to the store. These grocery shopping bags even have mesh produce bags so you can skip the plastic when loading up on fruits and veggies!

Weekly farm box subscription

Farm box

We LOVE our weekly farm box! It gets delivered straight to our doorstep, and you even get to customize the produce each week! This saves us money, is about 90% organic produce, all from local farms down the road, and supports small businesses! The best part is that there is NO plastic! You even get to save your box, and the company will pick it up on your next delivery to re-use it for future farm boxes.

Storage

Eco friendly

After completing a jar of sauce or jam, instead of throwing it away, how about cleaning it out and reusing it?! You can even select the cutest looking pasta jar at the store to use later in your kitchen. We love our jars, and they look way better than storing things in bags or in plastic containers! This also helps with purchasing items in bulk. Bring your jars to the store, and usually the employees are happy to weigh your jar before you fill it so you are not charged for the weight. Then head over to the bulk section and fill up your jars with rice, oats, legumes, or whatever else you may want! You can also use jars or other reusable packaging when ordering out. Bring your packaging to the restaurant, so they can put your to go order in there straight away.

Plastic zip-lock bags are also something that we try to avoid. Reusable containers are a great way to opt out of one-time-use plastic bags!

Reusable coffee cups

Eco friendly

This is something we love to see at Belle Surf! We even give you a little discount when you bring in your own coffee mug. With COVID-19 playing a huge role in needing to be extra cautious with germs, unfortunately we have had to pause accepting reusable coffee cups. However, we do use biodegradable / plant based cups and straws to help do our part. Hopefully you can use your cups again soon, and make a positive impact on the environment!

Recycle

Eco friendly

Recycling is incredibly important for the environment. We all shop at the store and typically there is always something in packaging whether it be plastic, paper, cardboard boxes, cans, or more! Although the real solution is to avoid buying as much non bio degradable waste as possible, it can be quite difficult to completely avoid! This is why recycling is so important. Make sure to check out these tips on reducing waste and recycling right, so that your items are actually accepted at the recycling center.

We hope that these 6 ways to ‘go green’ in the kitchen will help you learn a thing or two, and reduce waste on the environment. We are all in this together! Here at Belle Surf Cafe, we are constantly trying to improve and reduce our environmental footprint.
