Where to find Turtles in Maui?

It is easy to find sea turtles in Maui. While worldwide green turtle populations are shrinking, in Hawaii, the overall green sea turtle population has increased 53% over the last 25 years! Thanks to Hawaii conservation programs. Are you wondering where to find turtles in Maui? Here is a list of locations where you will definitely find them, and some other interesting facts about them!

In Hawaiian, turtles are called “Honu”, and spotting one is a sign of good luck! There are 5 different species living in the Hawaiian Islands, the most common one being the Green Sea Turtle.

Before giving you the best locations to find sea turtles, here are some facts you need to know.

Help protect them

1-Keep at least a 10 feet distance from the turtles.

We want these beautiful creatures to keep coming back to our beaches to rest and give birth. But if they are constantly bothered by humans they will go somewhere else. So please respect their private space and make sure you do “Social Distancing” just like with any other human at the moment!

2-Pick up your trash

Entanglement in debris like fishing line or ingestion of plastic pieces can severely injure or kill turtles. The best way to help sea turtles is by reducing your consumption of single-use plastics like straws, cutlery, and takeout containers. If you find trash on the beach, do your part and pick it up 🙂

3-Do not harm the reef

This is where turtles find most of their food, when snorkeling make sure you use reef-safe sunscreen and be cautious not to step on coral.

Now you know a little bit more about how to respect and help preserve this pretty and peaceful creature that has been around long enough to see dinosaurs evolve and go extinct.

Here is a list of the best locations where you can see turtles in Maui.

1- Kapalua and Napili Bay.

Both of these bays offer calm and clear water ideal for snorkeling. The amount of turtles in this locations is not as high as the upcoming ones. But if you want to snorkel safely and enjoy the beach with your family this is a great place! You can usually find turtles near the rocks on the shore on the left side of the beach.

TURTLE KAPALUA BAY

2- Honokeana Cove.

This location does not offer a white sand beach to relax. But the amount of turtles in this bay is insane! Jump in the water from the rocks and you will find dozens of turtles swimming around. You can’t miss them here.

3-Ho’okipa.

In Ho’okipa there are always many turtles resting on the right hand side of the beach. Local people have built a small rock wall to make sure their peace is not disturbed. So please enjoy sighting this creature from a distance. This beach is also a surfer’s and windsurfer favorite and there is usually impressive watersport action to watch!

 

Turtles are pretty much all around the Island. Get yourself some polarized sunglasses and you will easily spot them from the beach. Or simply jump in and go for a swim. Most of the time they are right near rocky shores eating some seaweed!
